    What's the story

WhatsApp has introduced a new security feature in its latest beta update for Android, version 2.24.20.16, available through the Google Play Beta Program.

This innovative facility is designed to block messages from unknown accounts, that send an unusually high volume of texts within a short period.

The primary aim of this update is to protect users from unwanted or potentially harmful communications, enhancing their overall app experience.

Feature now available for public testing

The security facility to block messages from unknown accounts is currently available for public testing.

Some beta testers have already started experimenting with this option, which allows them to manage message filtering directly within the app settings.

To activate this feature, users need to navigate their privacy settings under the Advanced section, and enable the new 'block unknown account messages' option.

    Functionality

    How does the feature work?

The new security feature does not block all messages from unknown accounts. Instead, it specifically targets those accounts that send a large number of messages within a short period.

This approach ensures that users still receive important messages from unknown contacts, while preventing their devices from being overloaded with spam.

The algorithm tracks message rates and automatically lifts the block when messaging volume returns to normal levels.

    User safety

WhatsApp's proactive approach to user protection

WhatsApp will also suggest enabling this feature if it detects a user is receiving a significant number of messages from unknown accounts.

This proactive approach is part of the company's efforts to protect users from possible spam or phishing attempts.

The security feature is now offered to some beta testers who install the latest updates of WhatsApp beta for Android from the Google Play Store, and will be rolled out to more people in the coming weeks.
