What's the story

WhatsApp, the messaging platform owned by Meta, is extending its passkey login feature to iOS devices. This comes several months after the feature was first introduced on Android. The rollout process is currently underway and is anticipated to be accessible to all users in the forthcoming weeks. The use of passkeys is considered a more secure login method as it significantly reduces the risk of scammers tricking users into disclosing their SMS passcodes.

Security upgrade

WhatsApp's new feature is a step toward a password-less future

Passkeys offer an alternative to traditional passwords, allowing users to authenticate via facial recognition, biometrics, or a PIN stored in Apple's passkey manager. Newton-Rex, WhatsApp's head of product, stated that "Passkey verification will make logging back into WhatsApp easier and more secure." This update signifies another move toward a future without passwords. With this feature enabled, users can utilize iPhone biometrics for login — Face ID or Touch ID — or their phone's passcode.

Release confirmation

Passkeys are a more secure form of authentication

WhatsApp spokesperson Alsawah confirmed that the passkey feature will be visible to all iOS users "in the coming weeks." He encouraged those who have not yet seen the update to remain patient and continue checking. Passkeys are recognized as a more secure form of authentication, eliminating the need for passwords and SMS two-factor authentication. Interestingly, this feature also allows sign-in without a network connection as the phone stores the authentication key.

Login process

Users will still need to scan a QR code

Despite the introduction of passkeys, users will still need to scan a QR code from the "Linked Devices" menu in the smartphone app to log into WhatsApp on other devices. Alsawah pointed out that this is necessary "since Mac, Windows and web can't be primary devices for an account." To verify if the passkey feature is available, WhatsApp suggests checking under Settings > Account > Passkeys. However, rollouts like this can take time.
