WhatsApp's new feature will let you share files without internet
WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature that will allow users to share files without an internet connection. According to WABetaInfo, the popular messaging app is working on enabling offline sharing of photos, videos, music, and documents. The shared files will be encrypted for security against tampering or corruption. Screenshots from the latest WhatsApp beta for Android reveal the permissions required for this feature to function.
What permissions will the upcoming feature require?
To enable this offline file-sharing feature, WhatsApp will need to identify nearby phones that also support it. This is a common system permission on Android that allows apps to scan nearby devices via Bluetooth for local file sharing. Additionally, the app will require permission to access system files and your phone's photo gallery, as well as location permission to determine if other devices are within connection range.
WhatsApp assures secure sharing of files
Despite requiring these permissions, WhatsApp assures that phone numbers will be masked and shared files will be encrypted, ensuring a secure sharing process. This upcoming feature is akin to peer-to-peer file-sharing apps, which allow users to share files between devices without a cellular or Wi-Fi connection. While the release date for this feature has not been disclosed by WhatsApp, its presence in beta testing suggests an imminent launch.
WhatsApp is also developing a Quick Reaction feature
In addition to offline file sharing, WhatsApp is also developing a quick reaction feature for status updates. This tool, similar to Instagram's, will make it easier for users to appreciate content and boost user engagement by consolidating reactions in one screen. Users can swiftly respond to posted content by adding reactions directly on status updates. Unlike the current system where emoji reactions are typically seen within conversation threads, these reactions will be displayed on the status screen itself.
