The feature was first announced in an earlier WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.11.13 update, where it was revealed that work was underway on a function to clear unread message notifications automatically each time the app is opened.
New feature aims to prevent notification overload
The primary goal of this new feature is to prevent users from feeling overwhelmed by a growing number of unread notifications. It allows them to start afresh with a zero unread message count each time they open the app, ensuring focus on the most recent and relevant messages. Some beta testers can now manage this option within their notification settings, thanks to the latest WhatsApp beta update available on the Google Play Store.
2 options for managing home screen badge
The update provides users with more control over their home screen badge behavior. They can choose between two options for clearing the home screen badge count. The first option allows the app badge to be updated after each view, accurately reflecting the number of unread messages or missed calls after each viewing session. If some messages are read but others left unread, the badge adjusts accordingly, providing a snapshot of what still needs attention.
Second option allows for a clutter-free home screen
The second option is the default setting that enables users to reset the badge count every time they open WhatsApp, irrespective of whether they've read the messages or not. This feature is useful for those who prefer to clear their notification badges as soon as they open WhatsApp, keeping track of new messages without being distracted by accumulating old unread counts. It is especially beneficial for users who receive a high volume of messages.
