You can now add Instagram links to your WhatsApp profile
What's the story
WhatsApp has pushed a new update for its Android app, bumping it up to version number 2.25.7.9.
The update brings a handy feature to add links of social media profiles to the accounts, and is currently being tested with select beta users.
The capability was first spotted in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.4.9 update and aims at providing convenience, by letting users share social media profiles directly through their WhatsApp accounts.
User convenience
Profile links for easy access
Once a social media username is added to a WhatsApp account, the link will automatically appear at the top of the chat info page.
The feature is aimed at making it easier for contacts to visit the profile with just one tap.
Currently, only links to Instagram profiles can be added but support for more social media platforms is expected in future updates, permitting users to share their online presence more comprehensively.
User control
Privacy settings for these links
Along with this, WhatsApp is also introducing privacy settings to control who gets to see your social media links.
You can choose to share these links with everyone, only your contacts, all contacts barring specific people, or keep them completely private.
These settings will give you full control over who can view your social media profiles from WhatsApp, and can be adjusted anytime as per your liking.
Authenticity concerns
Clarification on social media links
While the new feature makes users' social media profiles more accessible, it is worth noting that adding a link doesn't verify the ownership of the associated social media account.
The username can be entered manually by anyone and the presence of a link should not be considered proof of authenticity.
Also, this feature is optional and users who prefer keeping their profiles private can skip it.
