Apple Watch Series 10 to offer sleep apnea detection
Apple is gearing up to unveil its latest smartwatch, the Apple Watch Series 10 on Monday. According to information obtained by 9to5Mac, the new model will boast an array of changes, including a larger screen and an improved electrocardiogram (ECG) sensor. The sensor is designed to offer more precise results, and unlock additional health monitoring capabilities, including sleep apnea detection.
How will it work?
Sleep apnea is a condition characterized by intermittent breathing during sleep. Its detection feature was initially reported by Bloomberg and later confirmed by sources close to 9to5Mac. To diagnose sleep apnea, users will need to wear their Apple Watch for several nights, similar to the process used in watchOS 11's Vitals app.
Changes in health data processing
Apple is also revamping how health data from these sensors is processed. The company plans to use new algorithms within the Health app on iPhones for detecting atrial fibrillation, instead of processing this information on the Apple Watch itself. These enhancements are expected to be incorporated into the Apple Watch Ultra 3 as well.
Bigger screens
The Apple Watch Series 10 is set to feature larger screens, with the smaller model offering a resolution higher than the 41mm Apple Watch, but slightly lower than the 45mm variant. The larger model's resolution will be similar to that of the 49mm Apple Watch Ultra. These screen enhancements indicate that the Series 10 will be available in both 44mm and 48mm sizes.
New watch faces and improved water resistance
To complement the larger screens, Apple is introducing new watch faces including "Reflections," which responds to ambient light. A new Hermes face named "Regatta" will also be available, allowing users to easily start a timer. The Series 10 models are expected to offer enhanced water resistance, making them suitable for high-speed water sports up to depths of 20 meters.
Advanced display technology and AI capabilities
The Apple Watch Series 10 will feature advanced OLED display technology known as low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT). This upgrade aims to enhance power efficiency and potentially improve display quality or extend battery life. The new model is also expected to house a new processor, likely named the S10, which could boost the Neural Engine and pave the way for future AI capabilities.
