Is Vivo Y17 the best smartphone under Rs. 18,000?
Taking on the likes of Redmi Note 7 Pro, Realme 3 Pro, and Galaxy A50 in the mid-range segment, Vivo has launched the Y17 in India at Rs. 17,990. The key highlights of the phone are its triple-lens rear camera, mid-level internals including MediaTek Helio P35 processor, and a powerful 5,000mAh battery. But is it worth the price? Let's dig deeper to find out.
Vivo Y17: At a glance
Like several other Vivo offerings, the Y17 sports a waterdrop notched display and slim bezels to offer a screen-to-body ratio of 89%. The back panel, which houses a triple camera setup and a fingerprint sensor, gets a mirror-finish gradient. And while the design may attract many, the phone's 6.35-inch HD+ (720x1544 pixels) LCD display is a disappointment at this price point.
For the shutterbugs and selfie lovers
Vivo Y17 features a triple-lens rear camera comprising a 13MP (f/2.2) main sensor, an 8MP (f/2.2) wide-angle sensor and a 2MP depth sensor. Up front, there's a 20MP (f/2.0) selfie snapper. Clearly, the optics are not that appealing. In fact, minus the wide-angle lens, Y17 trails Realme 3 Pro which has a 16MP (f/1.7)+ 5MP(f/2.4) dual-lens rear camera and a 25MP (f/2.0) front shooter.
Under the hood
The Vivo Y17 is powered by a MediaTek Helio P35 processor, paired with 4GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Under the hood, it packs a 5,000mAh battery with 18W fast-charging support and runs Android Pie-based Funtouch 9.0. Again, the phone fails to compete against a relatively cheaper Realme 3 Pro which comes with Snapdragon 710 chipset and 4,045mAh battery with 20W fast-charging.
Connectivity options and sensors onboard the Vivo Y17
In terms of connectivity options, the Vivo Y17 offers support for 4G VoLTE, dual-SIMs (Nano), Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS/A-GPS, micro-USB port, and a headphone jack. Further, it provides all standard sensors such as an accelerometer, proximity and e-compass among others.
So, is Vivo Y17 worth it at Rs. 18,000?
While the Vivo Y17 will grab a few eyeballs with its attractive design, impress some with its cameras, and satisfy many with its massive 5,000mAh battery, it doesn't check all the boxes. In fact, for a starting price of Rs. 13,999, the Realme 3 Pro is a far more complete package with a better camera, a superior processor, and a better screen.
