#CES2018: World's first smartphone with in-display fingerprint sensor is here!
Neither Apple's iPhone nor Samsung's Galaxy device, but a Vivo smartphone will have the world's first under-the-screen fingerprint scanner. Vivo has unveiled a phone with an in-display fingerprint sensor at the ongoing CES-2018 in Las Vegas. We've been hearing rumors that Apple and Samsung are striving to bring the next-generation fingerprint recognition technology first, but Vivo beat the giants in the race. Here's more!
Pioneering the development of fingerprint scanning technology: Vivo SVP
Vivo Senior Vice-President Alex Feng stated: "Today's showcase of a ready-to-produce in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone with an optical fingerprint sensor is a step forward in bringing consumers this futuristic mobile experience. We are very excited to make it available to consumers soon."
What we know about the Vivo phone so far
Vivo has not announced the name of the smartphone it is embedding the in-display fingerprint recognition technology into. However, it said the smartphone's display was ready for mass production; the device will be launched in the first half of 2018. Meanwhile, several reports claim the device could be Vivo X20 Plus UD, suggesting Vivo is integrating the technology into X20 Plus launched last year.
Vivo is using "Clear ID" fingerprint sensor
For incorporating the fingerprint technology in its smartphones, Vivo has opted for biometrics company Synaptics' optical sensor, according to The Verge. The sensor -called "Clear ID"- works by scanning and recognizing the user's fingerprint through the tiny gaps between the pixels in an OLED display.
Here's what the phone rumored to offer
The rumored Vivo X20 Plus UD is expected to come with an aluminum unibody metal design and 18:9 AMOLED display just like the X20 and X20 Plus devices. It could be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor and Adreno 512 GPU paired with 4GB/6GB of RAM. Also, there could be a 24MP selfie shooter and a dual 24MP+5MP rear camera setup.
Vivo smartphone to have an early release this year
In 2017, Vivo showcased a concept phone with an under-the-screen fingerprint sensor at the Mobile World Congress in Shanghai. But now the Chinese smartphone maker has actually unveiled the final device embedded with the latest fingerprint technology at CES 2018. Vivo is likely to bring the device out soon and become the first to launch this smartphone technology, raising the bar for others.
This phone could be second to have in-display fingerprint sensor
Meanwhile, another Chinese device-maker DOOGEE is also working on a smartphone called "DOOGEE V" with an under-the-screen fingerprint sensor. Reports say the DOOGEE phone "with a notch on the top" seems to be heavily inspired by iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy Note 8.
