Unihertz Atom XL: Modern Android smartphone made for rough use
China-based Unihertz has launched a pocketable rugged smartphone that packs all the latest specs and is designed to survive rough use. Dubbed the Atom XL, the waterproof, dustproof, and shockproof handset offers a 4-inch touchscreen, 48MP rear camera, and runs on Android 10. It is currently available on Kickstarter for $259 (approx. Rs. 19,000). Here are more details.
Atom XL can even survive a fall down a hill
The Atom XL sports a conventional screen with prominent bezels and a physical fingerprint reader placed on the bottom bezel. On the rear, there's a single camera and a flash unit. The IP68-rated handset has a metal body with a rubber shell that not only allows for a good grip but also makes it shockproof. It could possibly survive a fall down a hill.
For the shutterbugs and selfie lovers
For an affordable industrial phone, it has pretty decent cameras. The main unit is a 48MP autofocus sensor, while the selfie snapper is an 8MP fixed focus lens. Just for comparison sake, the $1,500 Motorola RAZR offers a 16MP rear camera and 5MP front-facing shooter.
Under the hood
The Atom XL is powered by a mid-range MediaTek Helio P60 chipset, paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. It runs on Android 10 and packs a 4,300mAh battery, which supports fast charging. The handset also supports dual-SIMs, dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC, infrared, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a DMR Walkie-talkie function that lets you connect with others even without network coverage (within 8km range).
Pricing and availability
The Atom XL is currently available on Kickstarter at $259 (Rs. 19,000). There's also an affordable Atom L model, which costs $209 (Rs. 15,500) but misses out on the DMR Walkie-Talkie function. As for deliveries, the company expects to ship the handset in June.
