TRAI warns against fraudulent calls threatening mobile number disconnection
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a warning to the public, about fraudulent calls made in its name. These deceptive calls involve threats of mobile number disconnection and requests for personal information. TRAI clarified that it does not communicate with customers regarding mobile number disconnection, nor has it authorized any third-party agency to do so.
Communication from TRAI should be treated as fraudulent
In a statement, TRAI emphasized that any communication (message, call, or notice) claiming to be from them and threatening mobile number disconnection, should be regarded as a potential fraudulent attempt. The authority clarified that issues related to billing, KYC compliance or misuse leading to mobile number disconnection are handled by the respective Telecom Service Provider (TSP), not by TRAI.
Public advised to cross-verify suspicious calls
TRAI has advised the public to remain vigilant and not panic or fall for these suspected scams. The authority suggested that individuals should cross-verify such calls by reaching out to the authorized call centers/customer service centers of their respective TSP. This measure is intended to help prevent unsuspecting individuals from becoming victims of these fraudulent schemes.
TRAI encourages reporting of suspected fraudulent communications
TRAI has also encouraged citizens to report any suspected fraudulent communications via the Chakshu facility on the Department of Telecom's Sanchar Saathi platform. This initiative is part of an effort to prevent the misuse of telecom resources for cybercrimes and financial fraud.
