Zuckerberg's Threads overtakes Musk's X in daily user count
Meta's communication platform, Threads, has overtaken Elon Musk's X, formerly known as Twitter, in daily active users (DAUs) within the United States. This change was observed in December 2023 according to data intelligence firm Apptopia. "Threads DAUs in the US passed X in December 2023 and it has not looked back," said Thomas Grant, Apptopia's VP of research. Currently, Threads ranks as the third most popular free app on Apple's App Store while X trails at 41st place.
Challenges faced by X and growth of threads
X has struggled to attract new users due to issues such as hate speech and spam bots, despite Musk's commitment to address these problems. Market research firm Sensor Tower found that X had only 27 million active daily app users in the US this February, an 18% decrease from the previous year. In contrast, Threads has seen significant growth with an estimated average of 28 million daily active users, a 55% increase since December.
Zuckerberg optimistic about Threads's future growth
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg remains hopeful about Threads's growth. "(Threads) continues to be on the trajectory that I hope to see," Zuckerberg said on Wednesday during the company's earnings call. He also revealed that Threads now has over 150 million monthly active users, a significant increase from over 130 million in February and approximately 100 million users in last October.
Threads's new features and future developments
Since its launch in July 2023, Meta has been adding new features to Threads to attract more users. These include a fully operational web application, keyword search, trending topics, an edit button, voice posts, and support for multiple accounts. In March, Meta allowed users in the US, Canada, and Japan to share their posts with the fediverse. Furthermore, Meta is developing a Threads API for creators and brands to manage their presence effectively. It may release by June end.
