Boston Dynamics' Spot robot can now unlock doors
Boston Dynamics' renowned four-legged robot, Spot, has gained a new capability to autonomously unlock doors. This advancement is the result of a collaboration with Assa Abloy, a leading door hardware company. The partnership aims to enhance Spot's functionality in security patrol sessions, and inspection tasks at facilities like power plants and oil refineries.
Spot's new feature operates via Bluetooth
The newly integrated feature allows Spot to unlock automated doors using "embedded digital access credentials" that operate over Bluetooth. This marks a significant step forward in the robot's abilities, as it was previously unable to autonomously open access-controlled doors.
Boston Dynamics initiated the feature proposal
The idea for this innovative feature was proposed by Boston Dynamics to Assa Abloy. The company has been working on refining Spot's ability to open doors, reminiscent of a velociraptor's ability, for several years now. This collaboration with Assa Abloy marks a significant milestone in their ongoing efforts to enhance Spot's capabilities, and versatility in various operational settings.
