2018 iPhone X, iPhone X Plus will support Apple Pencil
Apple is working to launch three new iPhones this year - a 6.1-inch LCD iPhone with dual-SIM support and two OLED iPhones with 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch displays. And pretty much all the details regarding the design and features of these upcoming iPhones has leaked online. In the latest update, a report suggests the two OLED iPhones will support Apple Pencil. Here's more on this.
What does the report tell us?
The report suggests the 5.8-inch 2018 iPhone X and 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus, will support Apple Pencil - an accessory that works exclusively with all iPad Pros and the new sixth-generation iPad. Further, the report adds that Taiwanese stylus chip supplier Elan will likely be Apple's supplier. However, it is unclear if the Apple Pencil will come bundled with the iPhones or sold separately.
But, what is an Apple Pencil?
Apple Pencil, which resembles an everyday pencil, is essentially a stylus. The Apple Pencil has built-in sensors to determine pressure, orientation, and angle. Hence, you can press harder for thicker lines or create shading-effect by tilting - like a regular pencil. The Apple Pencil, sold separately for $99, offers a 12-hour battery life and boasts of minimal latency - atleast on the iPad Pro.
Apple may introduce a new Apple Pencil alongside the iPhones
The Apple Pencil was launched alongside the 12.9-inch iPad Pro back in 2015. However, considering the size of the current variant, Apple Pencil will prove to be counter-intuitive to use with iPhones - even with a big 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus. Further, Apple Pencil hasn't been upgraded in three years. Hence, it makes sense if Apple launches a smarter, smaller Pencil for upcoming iPhones.
Is Apple foraying into the phablet segment? Maybe
When it comes to phablet-sized smartphones, there is no competition to the Galaxy Note series - particularly the latest Note 9. And given Apple will launch a bigger 6.5-inch iPhone, with features such as an iPad-like landscape mode, it makes sense to offer a stylus which can be used to take notes, draw on the screen, annotate documents - like Samsung's S Pen.
