Google's Pixel 2 has an unexpected burn-in problem, among others
Google has a new problem to deal with. Reviewers who have been testing its newest smartphones for about two weeks have complaints about its screen. While some flagged a "burn in" on the display, others reported "muddy" discoloration. It had unveiled the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL just 20 days ago. The software giant said it is taking the issue "very seriously".
About Google's recently-launched Pixel 2
The Pixel smartphone Google released last year was well-received, but sales fared poorly - just 0.5% of the world market. To take on Apple and Samsung, it released the Pixel 2 on October 4. It has an all-aluminium body; a rear fingerprint sensor; front-facing stereo speakers and no headphone jack. It now features Active Edge squeeze function to bring the assistant to the users.
The new device hasn't had a great first week
It seems the new device isn't pleasing reviewers. The BBC reported its unit suffered from mild burn-in, which is typical of older phones and is unexpected on a new high-end smartphone. 'Burn-in' is when images appearing on the screen for long times leave a permanent mark. Leading publications like Android Central and CNET reported similar observations, especially on the notification bar and navigation keys.
Muted colors, grainy texture, bluish tint are just some complaints
This comes after several other display-related complaints: muted colors, a grainy texture, a bluish tint. However, those flaws were visible when compared to another, unlike the highly-obvious burn-ins. "We take all reports of issues very seriously, and our engineers investigate quickly," said Mario Queiroz, VP for Google's Pixel range. "We will provide updates as soon as we have conclusive data."
What can you do if you are noticing burn-in?
Do not try any workarounds. Do not rely on apps or softwares that claim to "fix" the problem. Last year, when some users complained of burn-ins with the Pixel, Google simply granted warranty replacements. Going by that, if your device malfunctions similarly in a few weeks or a month, you will probably be entitled to a replacement. Wait for more information before acting.
