Leaked news hints at new Intel Core i9
According to leaked news on tech forum AnandTech, Intel is all set to unveil a beast of a CPU - a Core i9 with 12 cores. It appears that an Intel partner or employee took a photo of a PowerPoint presentation with details of the full upcoming line up. The i9 will come in several variants, and is certainly not going to be cheap.
Intel vs AMD, the war rages on
It seems as if the Core i9 is a response to AMD's 8 core Ryzen 7 high-end processors released in March 2017. There are rumours, however, that AMD is coming up with a Ryzen 9 series equipped with 16 cores.
The specifications for the different Core i9 models
The Core i9-7800X, with 6 cores, will come with 28 PCIe lanes, a 3.5Ghz base overclockable to 4.0Ghz. The Core i9-7820X, with 8 cores, will have the same features, but a 3.6Ghz base overclockable to 4.5Ghz. The Core i9-7900X, with 10 cores, will have 44 PCIe lanes, a 3.3Ghz base overclockable to 4.5Ghz. The specs for the top-end 12 core Core i9-7920X is unknown.
Only for desktops
The Core i9s will have a power consumption of 140W and will only be usable in desktops for the time being.
Core i9s will soon be available
The Core i9s are set to hit the market pretty soon, with most of the models shipping out in June. The top-end Core i9, however, is scheduled for release in August. While prices are unknown as of now, TechCrunch estimates the top-end Core i9 to be priced at around $1000. The CPUs are expected to be unveiled at Computex 2017 in end-May.
