Tesla offering ₹4,000/hr to train its Optimus robots to walk
Elon Musk-owned Tesla is making significant strides in its Optimus humanoid robot project. Tesla is actively recruiting data collection operators, and offering an hourly wage of up to $48 (around ₹4,000) for these roles. The primary responsibility of these operators will be to gather movement data that will aid in training the robots. The hired individuals will don motion-capture suits and virtual reality headsets. These tools will be used to simulate movements that the robots are expected to replicate.
Job requirements and responsibilities
The Optimus robot training job requires applicants to be capable of walking for a minimum of seven hours daily. Additionally, they must fall within a height range of 5'7" to 5'11" (170cm-180cm) in order to operate the motion-capture suits provided by Tesla. These positions are advertised on LinkedIn, Indeed, and Tesla's website.
A solution to labor shortages
The Optimus project was launched by Tesla in 2021 as part of a broader initiative toward automation. This move is particularly relevant in sectors experiencing labor shortages and requiring increased efficiency. The company envisions these robots taking over tasks deemed unsafe, monotonous, or simply dull for human workers. Earlier this year, Tesla released a video demonstrating workers in motion-capture suits mimicking basic movements like lifting and placing objects.
Optimus robots show promise
Despite initial skepticism when Tesla first revealed a prototype of the robot named Bumble C in 2022, the project has shown significant progress. Recent reports indicate that these robots are beginning to demonstrate potential by successfully carrying out autonomous tasks within Tesla facilities. Musk has high expectations for these robots and envisions them playing a crucial role in Tesla's future growth strategy.
