TCL showcases concept phones with tri-fold design and rollable display
Chinese tech giant TCL has unveiled two new concept foldable phones as it looks to foray into this new device form-factor. One of the devices features a tri-fold design wherein the screen unfolds twice to transform into a massive all-screen tablet. The second model is all the more futuristic thanks to a rollable screen that can be pulled to achieve a tablet-like shape.
About TCL's tri-fold concept phone
The tri-fold concept phone sports a couple of hinges and a notch-less main screen which unfolds twice to offer a 10-inch tablet form-factor. The fully-opened screen has a 20.8:9 aspect ratio and an impressive 3K resolution. In the folded state, you get a 6.65-inch main screen. The company says it has used the in-house DragonHinge and ButterflyHinge technologies to create the working prototype.
TCL's rollable concept phone
TCL's rollable concept phone looks like a regular handset with a 6.75-inch Waterfall screen design, a dual-punch hole for the twin-cameras, and a glass back. However, a motorized mechanism hides a portion of the display, which, when activated, extends the main screen into a 7.8-inch tablet. The handset basically packs a rollable AMOLED screen that offers this futuristic smartphone-tablet hybrid combination.
Rollable display handset comes with a quad lens rear camera
On the rear, this radical rollable display concept phone packs a total of four sensors. The lenses are mounted on the movable section that extends or retracts with the display. Moreover, the extended display also seems to have some sort of back casing.
TCL has not revealed the specifications of both the phones
TCL has neither revealed the full specifications of these phones nor their pricing or availability details. Perhaps, they will remain as prototypes given the durability concerns that plague modern-day foldable devices. That said, the devices highlight the exciting future of foldable phones, showcasing new applications and use cases.
