Supreme Court of India's YouTube channel hacked, crypto content promoted
The Supreme Court of India's official YouTube channel has been compromised by hackers. The breach was detected when the channel began displaying videos endorsing XRP, a digital currency created by Ripple Labs, a US-based firm. The apex court has been utilizing this platform to broadcast hearings of cases heard before Constitution Benches and those concerning public interest.
Hackers target past hearing videos, promote cryptocurrency
The cyber attackers have seemingly set previous hearing videos to private on the compromised channel. They have posted a blank video titled "Brad Garlinghouse: Ripple Responds To The SEC's $2 Billion Fine! XRP PRICE PREDICTION." This incident is part of a larger trend where popular video channels are frequently targeted by scammers for various purposes including cryptocurrency promotion.
Ripple Labs previously sued YouTube over impersonation issues
Interestingly, Ripple Labs had previously taken legal action against YouTube for its failure to prevent hackers from impersonating its CEO, Brad Garlinghouse. As reported by The Verge, scammers have been creating official-sounding accounts for Ripple and Garlinghouse over the past several months. Some of these accounts were reportedly hacked from successful YouTubers, allowing scammers to reach a large audience and promote their schemes.
Supreme Court administration investigating YouTube channel hack
The administration of the Supreme Court is currently investigating the security breach of its YouTube channel, as confirmed by official sources to Bar & Bench. The incident underscores the growing threat of cyber attacks on high-profile digital platforms and the need for enhanced security measures. It also highlights the challenges faced by institutions in protecting their online presence from such breaches.
