Spotify introduces new custom typeface to enhance visual identity
Spotify has unveiled a significant visual update with the launch of its unique typeface, named Spotify Mix. This new font is set to replace the Circular typeface variant presently used across both app and desktop interfaces. Rasmus Wängelin, Spotify's global head of brand design, described the new font as a tribute to the "dynamic and evolving nature of audio culture over the years."
Collaboration with Dinamo Typefaces
The creation of Spotify Mix was a collaborative effort with Berlin-based foundry Dinamo Typefaces. Wängelin characterized the new variable font design as "quite literally, a remix" that merges elements from various typeface styles. He further elaborated that "the result is a sans-serif typeface that blends features from both classic and contemporary styles, creating a distinctive and unique look."
A unique blend of sound and design
The design of Spotify Mix subtly incorporates shapes of sound waves to evoke a rhythmic feel. It combines sharp angles as well as smooth curves to create a distinctive character that feels quintessentially Spotify. The company plans to use this new typeface in all aspects of its platform, from playlists to marketing campaigns, providing creative flexibility while maintaining a cohesive design.
Rollout and application across the platform
The variable nature of Spotify Mix allows for easy customization by altering aspects like weight, width, and slant without needing separate files. This feature enables varied appearances for content such as playlist covers and promos while preserving a unified design. In addition to its application within the app, Spotify's logo will also be updated with this new typeface. The first languages to adopt Spotify Mix will be those with Latin-based scripts and Vietnamese content.
