Spotify's new feature creates offline playlist when internet drops
Spotify has launched a new feature designed to keep the music playing even when users lose their internet connection. The app will now automatically generate an "Offline Backup" playlist, filled with recently streamed and downloaded songs. This innovative function is aimed at enhancing the user experience during unexpected loss of internet connectivity or deliberate disconnection, such as activating airplane mode on flights.
Offline backup playlist: A dynamic feature
The Offline Backup playlist is not a static feature, but one that adapts to individual user's listening habits over time. It will automatically appear in the Spotify app's home feed whenever a device goes offline. However, for this function to work, users must have enabled offline listening in their app settings and listened to more than five songs recently.
The feature is currently exclusive to premium customers
The Offline Backup playlist is currently available only to premium subscribers as part of its global rollout. Users can filter and sort this auto-generated playlist by artist, mood, or genre. Spotify has assured that the playlist will change and adapt to each listener's preferences over time, ensuring a unique mix of tracks for every user.
Spotify's offline backup mirrors features of other platforms
Spotify's new feature was first hinted at by CEO Daniel Ek last year, under the name "Your Offline Mix." It bears similarities to features offered by other streaming apps and services like YouTube Music's "Offline Mixtape" or Netflix's automatic download function for shows and movies based on previous viewing history. This suggests that Spotify is keeping pace with market trends in providing user-friendly solutions for uninterrupted entertainment.
