Sony celebrates PlayStation's 30th anniversary with retro-styled PS5 consoles
Sony is marking the 30th anniversary of PlayStation with a special collection that pays homage to the console's origins. The PlayStation 30th Anniversary Collection features retro-styled PS5 consoles and accessories, designed to evoke nostalgia among long-time fans. This unique range will be available for pre-order from September 26, exclusively on PlayStation Direct. The official launch of the collection is scheduled for November 21, two weeks after the PS5 Pro hits the market.
Limited-run PS5 Pro bundle is the centerpiece
The highlight of the 30th-anniversary collection is a limited-edition PS5 Pro bundle, with only 12,300 units available globally. This exclusive package includes a gray PS5 Pro console, DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers, charging station, console cover for disc drive, and vertical stand. Each unit will feature unique number etched on it as part of its exclusivity. Sony is yet to announce pricing for this bundle. Since PS5 Pro is priced at $699, the limited-run bundle is likely to cost more.
PlayStation 30th Anniversary Collection: A nod to the past
The collection also includes a PS5 Slim Digital Edition bundle and standalone versions of the DualSense controller, DualSense Edge controller, and PlayStation Portal remote player. All items in this range feature the classic gray color scheme and multicolored PlayStation logo, reminiscent of the original 1994 console. Hideaki Nishino, CEO of PlayStation's platform business group, stated that this collection honors "the beginning of our journey" and PlayStation's evolution over three decades.
Sony's strategy to boost PS5 sales
The anniversary products are part of Sony's holiday lineup, which also includes the recently announced PS5 Pro. With its enhanced specifications and now a limited nostalgic edition, Sony aims to stimulate sales and stir excitement around the PS5 series as it enters its fourth year on the market. The collection also features special collector's items like PlayStation-themed cable ties, stickers, and a limited-edition poster.
