Sony PlayStation 5 Pro full specs leaked ahead of launch
Sony is gearing up to introduce an upgraded version of its PlayStation 5 console, potentially by the end of this year. The new model, internally referred to as 'Trinity,' may debut as PlayStation 5 Pro with a more powerful GPU and a slightly faster CPU mode. According to Sony's internal documents seen by The Verge, the PS5 Pro's GPU rendering could be approximately 45% faster than that of the standard PS5.
Enhanced GPU and ray tracing in PS5 Pro
The enhanced GPU in the PlayStation 5 Pro will be larger and utilize quicker system memory to boost ray tracing in games. Sony is also integrating a more powerful ray tracing architecture into the PS5 Pro, promising speeds up to three times faster than the regular PS5. Developers are currently being asked to ensure their games are compatible with this upcoming console, with a focus on improving ray tracing capabilities.
PS5 Pro's CPU and memory upgrades
The PlayStation 5 Pro's CPU will be similar to the standard PS5 but will feature a new mode allowing it to run at higher speeds. Sony has informed developers that "Trinity has a mode that targets 3.85GHz CPU frequency," which is roughly 10% more than the regular PS5. Additionally, system memory available to developers on the PS5 Pro will be boosted by 28%, with games able to utilize an extra 1.2GB of system memory compared to the base model.
Custom architecture for machine learning on PS5 Pro
Sony has developed a "custom architecture for machine learning" on the PlayStation 5 Pro, capable of supporting 300TOPS of 8-bit computation. This unique architecture supports Sony's custom PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling solution, designed to enhance frame rates and image quality on PlayStation. Sony notes that "inputs are quite similar to DLSS or FSR" and that full HDR support is included in this innovative feature.
PS5 Pro compatibility and expected release date
Sony expects game developers to create a single package compatible with both the PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles, with existing games able to be updated for superior performance. Developers can now order test kits, and Sony anticipates every game submitted for certification in August to be compatible with the PS5 Pro. According to Insider Gaming, the console is slated for release during the 2024 holiday season.
