Snap to unveil new Spectacles AR glasses on this date
Snap Inc. is set to launch its fifth-generation Spectacles, featuring augmented reality (AR) capabilities, at the upcoming Partner Summit event on September 17. This information was confirmed by Evan Spiegel, CEO of Snap. The new model will be the second in Snap's lineup to offer AR features, following the company's initial introduction in a limited release last year.
Previous model faced limitations
The previous AR-enabled Spectacles were only available to a select group of creators and developers. Despite innovative uses that combined Snapchat's lenses with the AR displays, the device had its drawbacks. It offered an extremely narrow field of view and a battery life of just 30 minutes. Additionally, the glasses were bulkier than their predecessors, which resembled regular sunglasses more closely.
New AR Spectacles promise improved features
The upcoming AR Spectacles are reported to have a wider field of view and an extended battery life, addressing some of the limitations of the previous model. However, they will still primarily target developers rather than regular Snapchat users. The high production cost, reportedly in the thousands per pair, and Snap's plan to produce fewer than 10,000 units further emphasize this focus.
Snap's hardware ambitions remain despite past setbacks
Despite the discontinuation of its $250 Pixy selfie drone just four months after its 2022 launch, Snap remains committed to its hardware goals. The upcoming release of the new AR Spectacles underscores this commitment. However, it's important to note that these glasses are not intended for mass market consumption.
