Doctors might start prescribing sex robots to patients, says expert
Despite how you might feel about sex robots, they aren't going anywhere. From introducing features like highlighting consent to even setting up brothels exclusively for clients interested in sex robots, it seems someone really wants sexbots to become a thing. And recently, it has been proposed that sex robots could also be used for therapy to help patients diagnosed as "sexually dysfunctional."
Sex robots for therapy could be reality in a decade
Interestingly, Boston-based clinical psychologist and sex therapist Marianne Brandon gave a presentation at the Applied Evolutionary Psychology Society's Mental Health Conference earlier this month, where she said we are not too far from a time when sex robots would be prescribed to sexually dysfunctional patients. Dr. Brandon said that sophisticated sex robots could be developed in a decade or two.
What does the future look like for sex robots?
Sex robots are life-like anthropomorphic robots that would enable people to act out their sexual fantasies, no matter what they are. Once developed successfully (and mass-produced to lower the cost and cater individual needs), one could even pick up their "perfect sexual partners."
Sex robots could be disproportionately targeted at men
However, the fact that sex robots could introduce a whole host of problems is not lost on Dr. Brandon. While it's great that sex robots could be used for sexual therapy (basically your health insurance could cover a sex robot, if your doctor handed you a prescription), Dr. Brandon acknowledges that sex-robots would be disproportionately targeted at men, the same way pornography is.
Could sex robots also bring an end to human civilization?
Dr. Brandon stated that sex robots might lead to a decline in sexual interactions in relationships, eventually affecting relationship intimacy. We may see a drop in the number of marriages or birth rates as people would be less motivated to make relationships work, she added. Basically, robots could end humanity, just as Terminator predicted, only it'll be more of a psychological thriller than action.
