128TB SD card that will hold your entire media collection
The SD Association, a group of 900 tech companies that sets memory card standards, has announced a new card specification called "SD Express" that will increase data transfer speeds to 985MB/s from the current maximum transfer rate of 624MB/s. It has also announced an SD Ultra Capacity (SDUC) card format that will support maximum storage of a whopping 128TB, up from the current 2TB.
Hold a lifetime's worth of memories in high definition
A 128TB SD card will be able to hold over 29,000 Full HD movies, over 26 million photos with an average size of 5MB each, and over 16 million songs with an average size of 8MB each. This advancement will also be a boon for data-heavy, high-resolution technologies like 8K video and virtual reality (VR).
So how did this happen?
The new format by the SD Association integrates PCI Express and NVMe interfaces into SD memory cards. Both of these interfaces are known for their high-bandwidth and low-latency storage capabilities.
Don't expect the high storage and costly SD cards soon
The current maximum SD card storage capacity of 2TB was first promised in 2009, but it still hasn't reached consumers. In 2016, SanDisk unveiled a prototype of a 1TB SD card but that's also not commercially available yet. Presently, SanDisk's 512GB SD card is the best available option in the market and it costs $300.
