Galaxy G Fold: What to expect from Samsung's triple-folding smartphone
What's the story
Samsung is said to be working on a new member of its foldable smartphone family, the Galaxy G Fold, the company's first triple-folding smartphone.
The G Fold is rumored to come with a unique folding mechanism, setting it apart from Huawei's Mate XT Ultimate Edition, the first commercially available tri-fold phone.
Meanwhile, the South Korean tech giant is also gearing up to launch its Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7 in mid-July.
Design innovation
It will feature unique folding design
The Galaxy G Fold will revolutionize the foldable smartphone market with its unique G-style folding design.
This design is a stark contrast to Huawei's S-style design, which folds the screen in a zigzag pattern.
Samsung's innovative approach will fold all three display sections inward, keeping them protected when the phone is closed.
Screen specifications
A tablet-like inner screen is anticipated
As the Galaxy G Fold will fold in a unique way, it will need a dedicated outer display.
Reports indicate this could be the same 6.49-inch screen Samsung is planning for Galaxy Z Fold7.
When unfolded, the device is expected to sport a massive 9.96-inch inner screen, making it one of the biggest foldables in Samsung's lineup and offering a tablet-like experience when opened.
Manufacturing strategy
Samsung's production plans for the device
Samsung is likely to start sourcing components for Galaxy G Fold in April. This means the device could launch alongside Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7.
However, leaker Max Jambor says the device will be unveiled at a later point in time.
Samsung is also said to be taking a cautious approach with initial production restricted to just 200,000 units.
This strategy appears to be aimed at testing consumer interest before going for a wider release of this smartphone.
Market competition
Galaxy G Fold: An answer to Huawei's innovation
The launch of Galaxy G Fold could be Samsung's answer to the success of Huawei's Mate XT Ultimate Edition, a triple-folding smartphone that has taken the market by storm.
Although Samsung has previously showcased tri-folding prototypes, it has never launched one.
The introduction of this new model could help Samsung reclaim its competitive edge in the ultra-premium foldable space.
