Samsung patents a display covering both sides of a phone
Samsung is rumored to be launching its first foldable smartphone sometime in early 2019, but it seems that the company has started looking much beyond that. According to TechRadar, a patent filed by Samsung with the World Intellectual Property Organization in March showcases new technology that will allow the company to use flexible screens to put one display on both sides of a phone.
Details about what the patent reveals
It might sound difficult to visualize, but Samsung's patent reveals a flexible screen that can be draped over the top of a phone. The display covers one entire side, the top of the phone, and one side partially. The patent further reveals that the display on the rear of the phone takes up around one-third of the phone's rear surface area.
Potential uses of the two-sided display tech
What Samsung aims to achieve with such a display isn't really clear as of now. However, the new display can potentially allow users to see the selfies they take with rear cameras, thereby eliminating the need for a front camera. Additionally, the top edge of the phone can also be used for certain elements, including displaying notifications and controlling music.
The design is a patent, might not be actualized
It's important to note that the design is just a patent and the technology may never see the light of the day. However, it does offer insights into the ways in which Samsung is trying to improve its future devices. Meanwhile, Samsung has three major products lined up - the fully-foldable Galaxy X, the Galaxy S10, and the Galaxy Note 9.
