Samsung's new patent hints at vertically folding gaming handheld
What's the story
Samsung's latest patent application indicates the company is working on a one-of-a-kind gaming handheld.
The device, which is said to feature a vertical folding screen, could bring a whole new level of portability and convenience for gamers on the move.
It was unearthed from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) database, showing that Samsung is looking at new avenues in portable gaming.
Design details
What does the patent reveal?
As revealed by 91mobiles, the patent application details an "ornamental design for a remote controller," with sketches of the device from different angles.
The most interesting aspect is its vertical folding screen, which could make this rectangular device more pocketable and portable when folded in half.
But it still remains unclear how this would work with games that are normally designed for horizontal or landscape mode.

Design elements and features
The patent highlights a distinct design with side grips divided into two halves.
It remains unclear if these side controllers are detachable like Nintendo Joycons or Lenovo Legion Go.
The sketches also show similar D-pads, face buttons, and air triggers on either side of the device. A speaker grille appears to be positioned above and below the screen.
There's also a USB-C port that could be used as a charging jack or headphone socket.
Scenario
Samsung unveiled foldable gaming handheld concept at MWC
Samsung Display seems to have multiple concepts for gaming handhelds with folding screens.
At MWC 2025, the company unveiled the Flex Gaming Console, a prototype resembling a Nintendo Switch that can be folded when not in use.
Much like the Flex Gaming Console, there's no confirmation on whether Samsung plans to bring the latest patented design to market.
Note that the company showcased a similar concept at CES 2023.
