    What's the story

After years of rumors and speculations, Samsung's foldable smartphone, popularly known as the Galaxy X, is finally coming to reality.

No, the device hasn't been unveiled, but Samsung is moving ahead with development and testing phase, inching closer to a final prototype.

And, people familiar with the project's progress have confirmed that the phone will have a special version of Android.

    Here's more.

    Android details

Special Android interface for Samsung's 'Winner'

Bloomberg has reported that Samsung is working with Google to develop a special iteration of Android for its foldable phone codenamed 'Winner'.

Though it remains unclear what kind of OS this would be or the features it will have, the sources did note that interface will be customized according to a major design decision taken by Samsung.

    Design decision

The design debate: Here's what Samsung has to decide

Samsung has prepared two foldable phone prototypes - one that unfolds horizontally, taking the shape of a tablet, and other that opens vertically like a flip phone.

The designers at the company, according to the sources, prefer the flip phone-like design as it would be more comfortable to hold.

Either way, the final design will define what the Android's UI would look like.

    Information

Google's dedicated interface to improve experience

Unlike other dual-screen phones running Android, a custom-made version is likely to offer a better, far smoother user-experience. Also, it would better utilize the extra screen space on the device.

    Other capabilities

What else is coming with Samsung's foldable phone?

Though details are pretty murky, the Bloomberg report indicates Samsung 'Winner' will come with an added 4-inch screen on the outside for basic functions like messaging, answering calls.

The prototype weighs over 200 grams and misses an in-screen fingerprint scanner due to the bending mechanism of the device.

Its screen opens smoothly but is not as glossy as other smartphones in the market.

    Launch

When Samsung plans to launch the foldable device?

Bloomberg says Samsung is rushing the development of its bendable phone in order to "dominate a niche market with potential to grow."

Previously, it was suggested that the company would unveil the phone's prototype at its Developer's Conference next month, but the latest report states only "detailed conceptual images" will be shown.

The physical device could be showcased alongside Galaxy S10 next year.
