Samsung's foldable phone to be unveiled in November, suggests teaser
For a while now, we've had some tidbits about Samsung's foldable phone. And now, as per an official teaser of Samsung Developer Conference, the phone could be showcased on November 7-8. The teaser starts off with an animation which shows a single white line folding out into an arrow - similar to how we expect Samsung's foldable phone to function. Here's more.
Here's the official teaser with the subtle hint
Samsung's foldable phone will offer a unique experience
Concealing the finer details, Samsung Mobile's head DJ Koh had earlier said the device would offer a tablet-like experience with multitasking capability but can also be folded into a portable phone. "When we deliver a foldable phone, it has to be really meaningful to our customer...If the user experience is not up to my standard, I don't want to deliver those kinds of products," said Koh.
Samsung's foldable phone could be used in three positions
Interestingly, the animation starts off flat, then transitions to a 90-degree angle like a book, and further unfolds into a tablet-like position. This suggests how the phone can be used in closed, partially open, and fully open positions. Further, phrases like "The crossroads between the present and the future" and "Where Now Meets Next" also hint at the breakthrough design of the device.
We expect to see a prototype at Samsung Developers Conference
Considering the developer's conference is not a platform for hardware, we expect Samsung to unveil the finished product or at least a prototype on November 7 or November 8. However, the actual launch could happen in 2019 at CES or MWC. Interestingly, Koh has already said the phone will not be a "gimmick product" and that it will be made available globally.
Everything we know about Samsung's foldable phone aka Galaxy F
Samsung's Galaxy F, codenamed "Winner", is said to feature a 7-inch display that can fold into a pocket-sized device. The phone could possibly come with two displays - one primary 7-inch display and a smaller secondary display on the outside. Notably, this is a design that Samsung has been working on for some time now and got it patented last October.
Galaxy F will be a hybrid phone-cum-tablet device
The foldable device becomes a phone when folded. It can be unfolded for operating as a tablet, somewhat like a gaming-console similar to Nintendo's DS range. Earlier, a report said: "The in-folding type has a more drastic curvature rate. But due to the durability issue, the out-folding type is considered a more advanced next-generation technology." However, Samsung is likely to adopt the in-folding variant.
