Samsung's 64MP super camera could debut on Xiaomi phone
Just last month, Samsung announced a 64-megapixel 'super camera' for smartphones. The sensor came as an upgrade for the 48-megapixel technology, but back then, the company didn't say anything about the phone it would debut on. While many thought a Samsung-built device could be incorporating the new shooter, a tipster has revealed that Xiaomi will be the one doing the honors. Here's more.
64MP camera to show up on Redmi phone
Popular smartphone leaker Ice Universe recently shared a post on Chinese microblogging site Weibo noting that the 64-megapixel Bright GW1 image sensor will debut on Redmi smartphone. The phone might launch specifically for the Chinese market, the tipster said, without actually revealing the name or capabilities of the device in question. So, it still remains unknown which Redmi phone would it be.
International debut on Samsung phone only
While a Redmi phone would mark the Chinese debut of the sensor, the international launch would still be in Samsung's hands. The tipster added in the post that the international premiere of the sensor would belong to a mysterious A series device. Now, going by reports, this could well be the highly anticipated Galaxy A70s smartphone.
What makes this 64MP camera so special
Just like the 48-megapixel shooter, the 64-megapixel ISOCELL GW1 sensor uses pixel-binning to merge four pixels and form a superpixel capable of producing high-quality images with 16-megapixel resolution. It features a pixel size of 1.6μm, which improves low light performance of the camera significantly, and comes bundled with improved real-time HDR and super phase detection for faster autofocusing on subjects.
Launch timeline, however, still remains unclear
It is worth noting that there's no word on when the smartphones in question would launch in the Chinese and global markets. Xiaomi's rate of launches indicates the phone could show up in the coming weeks following which Samsung might go ahead with A70s launch.
