Samsung patents new foldable phone with Z-fold design
While Samsung may not have had a perfect start with the Galaxy Fold, we know that the company is working on two new foldable phones and a whacky wearable device. And now, in a bid to take an early lead in the new hardware category, the South Korean tech giant has patented a device with a Z-fold design. Here's all about it.
Everything to know about Samsung's patented foldable phone
The patent was filed at the end of 2018 but it got published earlier this month. It details an out folding device featuring a single external screen with ultra-fine bezels. The main flexible screen has two folding lines that allows you to fold the device twice, allowing you to easily switch from a tablet form factor to a pocket-friendly size.
What are the applications of this design?
This design is similar to the Huawei Mate X but with an extra fold. Hence, when fully opened, you can use the device for browsing the internet, streaming videos, or analyzing spreadsheets. In the folded state, the device can be used for chatting and calling. The two-way foldable screen will also open new possibilities for multi-tasking.
When will Samsung release this phone?
A patent filing doesn't guarantee that a product is in the works but it certainly does weigh in on the idea of a possibility. Will Samsung ever release a phone like this? We don't know. But surely, the patent is a good indication that the company is working on new designs and applications as it aims to venture into this futuristic form-factor.
Meanwhile, Samsung will release Galaxy Fold next month
On a related note, Samsung announced that it is all set to launch its first-ever foldable phone, the Galaxy Fold, sometime in September. The tech giant said that it has fixed the issues on its $2,000 worth device, making it ready for the market.
