Samsung working on a smartphone with a wrap-around display

    What's the story

While Samsung may be jolted by its Galaxy Fold's display issues, the company is not giving up on design innovation. And, thank God for that!

According to a new patent awarded to Samsung, the Korean tech giant might be working on a phone with a screen that wraps around the entire device, from front to back.

Here's all about this ambitious Samsung phone.

    Design

Samsung's phone will have continuous display

As per the filing, the phone will be a dual-screen rather than a foldable one.

Up front, there will be a notch-less, hole-less main screen that will extend through the top and cover 3/4th of the device on the rear.

The phone won't feature a front camera. The rear camera will double up for taking selfies with the rear screen serving as the viewfinder.

    Use cases

    Better selfies, live translation

When you take a photo, the results will be shown on both the displays. Hence, if you are taking a photo, the subject can see what the camera is seeing. The same idea also allows for clicking high-quality selfies via the main camera.

Another application is translation which would allow one person to speak while the other can see the live translation.

    Information

Top edge of the screen will show notifications

Since the screen covers the front and back of the device, there would be a small area on the top edge of the phone. This portion of the display can be used to show notifications and alerts.

    Hopefully, soon

When will Samsung release this phone?

While a patent filing doesn't guarantee that Samsung would release a phone like this, it is a good indication that the company is working on new designs and applications.

However, Samsung isn't the first one to think of this design. Vivo has recently launched Vivo NEX Dual Display phone which features two displays, although the screen isn't a continuous one.
