Apparently, Samsung has sent foldable display samples to Apple, Google
Apple, the world's most famous tech giant, appears to be gearing up for the age of foldable phones. A new report from a South Korean news agency has indicated that the company might be exploring Samsung's foldable display tech for future 'flexible' iPhones. Even Google appears to be looking into the same tech. Here are the details.
Samsung delivered foldable display samples to Apple, Google
Just recently, South Korean news agency ETNews cited an industry source to report that Samsung has supplied some samples of its foldable display panels to Apple and Google. The source, who has not been named, didn't provide specific details but confirmed that the company has sent samples measuring 7.2-inches, which is just 0.1-inches smaller than the panel that comes with the new Galaxy Fold.
Here's what the source told ETNews
"We know that Samsung Display has supplied a set of foldable displays to Apple and Google in order to fully expand its display business and uncover customers," the source told ETNews [translated] while revealing the development.
Is Apple working on a foldable phone?
The news, which has not been confirmed, indicates that Apple might be exploring Samsung's foldable display technology for a flexible iPhone. Though the company has not said anything about building a foldable iPhone, recent patent filings suggest it's definitely exploring this category. Plus, it already sources most display components for the latest iPhones from Samsung - so that fits as well.
Same could be Google's case
Just like Apple, Google may also be using Samsung's foldable panels for its products. The company has already promised a special version for Android for 'foldables' and could be planning a foldable tablet/smartphone under the premium 'Pixel' brand.
Still, there's no fixed timeline
Having said that, it's important to note that there's no way to say when or if Google and Apple will launch their respective foldable devices. Google's plans have not been tipped, while Apple has just got a few patents, with no solid information. Analysts predict the latter won't release a foldable iPhone until 2020, which, in our opinion, could be a wise choice.
Apple might wait for the tech to mature
Foldable phones have opened a new category for smartphones, but they're still at a nascent stage (only three devices). As such, Apple might resort to waiting a bit so that the technology is not just mature but also more affordable than it is today.
