Samsung's mid-range smartphones could soon come with 12GB RAM
As more and more users gravitate towards cheaper options, Samsung has started introducing cutting-edge technology on its mid-range smartphones to grab the lion's share. In the latest development, the South Korean tech giant has announced that it has started the mass production of the industry's first 12GB LPDDR4X-based uMCP, suggesting future mid-range phones could offer over 10GB of RAM. Here are more details.
About Samsung's new multi-chip package
Samsung's 12GB LPDDR4X-based uMCP (UFS-based multi-chip package) is an industry-first silicon chip that combines four 24GB LPDDR4X chips with an ultra-fast eUFS 3.0 NAND storage to offer a maximum RAM capacity of 12GB. The company is also working on another uMCP memory solution that uses two 24Gb (3GB) chips with two 16Gb (2GB) chips and the eUFS 3.0 NAND to offer 10GB RAM.
The new chipset will offer faster data transfer rate
Samsung's 24-gigabit (Gb) LPDDR4X memory package is 1.5 times more powerful than the previous 8GB package. It is touted to offer a data transfer rate of 4,266Mbps and support 4K video recording as well as enhanced AI/machine learning features.
When will Samsung release these chipsets?
According to SamMobile, "Samsung will rapidly expand the availability of these packages." However, there is no timeline as to when the company will officially release these new chipsets. We believe Samsung could debut these memory solutions on its upcoming Galaxy A series smartphones such as Galaxy A91 or the low-cost flagship models such as Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Lite or Galaxy S10 Lite.
For 2020, Samsung has new tricks up its sleeves
Meanwhile, in a bid to take on rivals, Samsung has revamped its Galaxy A series and M series. It has already launched a bunch of budget and mid-range phones, offering the latest Infinity-V and Infinity-U designs, sharper AMOLED displays, multiple cameras, and bigger batteries. Now, the company is aiming to attract buyers by offering higher memory and faster storage options on mid-range smartphones.
