Samsung likely to launch a foldable smartphone in 2019
What's the story
2019 will be a big year for all smartphones lovers, and more importantly for Samsung fanboys.
The company will launch its 10-anniversary Samsung Galaxy S10 range which will either make or break its position as a global smartphone maker.
And now, a WSJ report suggests Samsung is also working on a foldable smartphone that might be unveiled early next year.
Here's a sneak peek.
"Winner"
Everything to know about Samsung's foldable smartphone
According to WSJ, Samsung's foldable phone, codenamed "Winner", will feature a 7-inch display that can fold into a pocket-sized device.
The phone could possibly come with two displays - one primary 7-inch display and a smaller secondary display on the outside.
Notably, this is a design that Samsung has been working on for some time now and got it patented last October.
In the works
Samsung has been working on the device for a while
For quite some time now, Samsung has been working on it, considering this design requires transitioning from bezel-less displays to bendable displays.
Back in April last year, Samsung Display's principal engineer, Kim Tae-woong said, "We still have enough time to develop foldable display".
Back then, Samsung said it will probably introduce a foldable phone in 2019 - something which the WSJ also now reports.
Secret session
Samsung may have already unveiled "Winner" to a select few
Interestingly, in January this year at CES, Samsung secretly unveiled its foldable smartphone to a select few.
It was reported back then that Samsung will launch two versions of the device and both of them will feature a 7.3-inch OLED screen.
Moreover, Samsung had planned to start mass-production this year and launch the devices in 2019.
Looks like Samsung is on track.
