Samsung to launch a vertically folding phone sometime in 2020
Though Samsung may have its back against the wall with its first-ever foldable phone, the company is surely not giving up on its foldable dreams. A new report has claimed that the South Korean tech giant is working on a clamshell-like foldable device that it plans to launch sometime next year. Here's more on this development.
Samsung's foldable phone will feature a Moto RAZR-like design
Unlike the Galaxy Fold, wherein the main screen folds in, this Samsung foldable phone will fold vertically - similar to the reincarnated Moto RAZR. According to the report, the device will feature a 6.7-inch flexible OLED display that will serve as the main screen and a smaller 1-inch secondary display on the outer shell for notifications.
Reportedly, Samsung has been working on this model for sometime
To note, in March, Bloomberg reported that Samsung was working on two foldable phones. One of the devices was claimed to be a vertically-folding phone with a larger internal display and a secondary external display (which may or may not land on the final version). The other device was said to be an out-folding model with a single external screen, like Huawei's Mate X.
The phone will go into production by 2019-end or early-2020
According to the report, Samsung will start manufacturing this new model by late-2019 or early-2020 and is expected to launch it sometime next year itself.
But concerns around foldable phones remain
While foldable displays mark the arrival of new technology and endless possibilities, their durability remains a grave concern. And alongside the fragility woes comes another serious issue - the astronomical price tags of these new-age devices. Meanwhile, Samsung's $2,000 Galaxy Fold is struggling to find a new release date while Huawei has postponed the launch of its $2,600 Mate X on precautionary grounds.
