Samsung is working to re-invent laptops with its foldable displays
Samsung is expected to unveil the world's first truly foldable smartphone in November. The device is touted to offer a tablet-like experience with multitasking capability and can also be folded into a portable phone. And taking inspiration from this radical design, Samsung is working to develop bigger devices like laptops with foldable displays. Here's how Samsung is looking to re-invent laptops.
Samsung is collaborating with OEMs to develop foldable laptop displays
Speaking at an event in South Korea, earlier last week, Lee Min-cheol, Samsung's vice president at marketing for PCs said, "Samsung is collaborating with display makers to develop laptops with foldable displays that will not just simply fold in and out but create new value and user experience" With dual-screen laptops already a reality, this foldable display in laptops could be a game-changer.
How will foldable displays change our present-day laptops?
Presently, we do have laptops with dual-screens with smarter touchscreen keyboard as against the conventional hardware keys. Or you have convertible devices that can flip and twist to change from laptops to tablets and vice-versa. However, these devices achieve this portable form-factor via a hinge. But with foldable displays, there won't be any hinge mechanism, offering an all-new design for convertible devices.
Future laptops and the various possibilities
With a display that can fold in-or-out, your future device could open in a book-shape to form a laptop with touchscreen keyboard. Further, it could be flattened to have a bigger display that you can use for watching movies or drawing on using the stylus. And then, an additional display on the outside will help it become an e-reader or simply show notifications.
