Samsung Galaxy S20-series goes official with new cameras, 120Hz screens

What's the story

Samsung has unveiled its new generation of flagship smartphones: a standard Galaxy S20, a bigger S20 Plus, and a top-end S20 Ultra. The new models come with industry-leading hardware including high-quality 120Hz screens, 5G support (in select regions), improved cameras with 8K video recording support, bigger batteries, and flagship-grade internals. Internationally, the S20-series will be available on March 6 with prices ranging from $1,000-1,600.

Samsung Galaxy S20 series: Design

The Galaxy S20 range comes with a new center-aligned punch-hole design featuring ultra-slim bezels on the top and bottom, curved edges, and a premium metal-glass body. On the rear, all the models sport a new L-shaped rectangular camera bump that houses up to four lenses (on the Ultra). The handsets also get Gorilla Glass 6 display protection and IP68-rated dust and water resistance.

Samsung Galaxy S20 series: All about the screen

In terms of sizes, the standard S20 bears a 6.2-inch screen while the S20 Plus and S20 Ultra sport a 6.7-inch and 6.9-inch display, respectively. All variants boast of a new Infinity-O Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, which offers a QHD (1440x3200 pixels) resolution, HDR10 support, and a high refresh rate of 120Hz. For secure biometric authentication, the screens come integrated with ultrasonic fingerprint scanners.

Primary camera: For the shutterbugs

The high-end S20 Ultra features a 108MP main sensor, 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera, 48MP telephoto shooter with 10x hybrid optical zoom and 100x Super Resolution zoom, and a DepthVision sensor. The S20 and S20 Plus get a similar setup but with 12MP ultra-wide shooter, 12MP wide-angle shooter, and a 64MP tertiary sensor with an f/2.0 telephoto lens. However, the S20 doesn't have a DepthVision sensor.

For the selfie lovers

On the front, the regular S20 and the S20 Plus come with 10MP (f/2.2) selfie shooters. On the S20 Ultra, Samsung says there is a new 40MP front camera that gives pro-grade selfies. In low-light situations, the sensor shifts to 10MP with larger pixels.

Camera features

All S20 phones can record 8K video

Samsung's flagships come with a host of new camera features. All handsets now support 8K video recording (at 24fps) and you can even pull out a 33MP image from these videos. There's also a Single Take which lets you shoot for up to 10-seconds and presents you with a variety of shots. Finally, there's improved video stabilization, better night mode, and built-in editing suite.

Under the hood

The S20 range is powered by a Snapdragon 865 or Exynos 990 chipset (depending on the region), paired with up to 16GB of RAM and up to 512GB of built-in storage. The S20 Ultra, S20 Plus, and S20 house a 5,000mAh, 4,500mAh, and 4,000mAh battery, respectively. They also support Fast Wireless Charging 2.0, reverse wireless charging, and up to 45W wired fast charging.

Pricing and availability

The pricing and availability details of the S20 handsets in India are yet to be revealed. However, internationally, the range starts at $999.99 (Rs. 71,300) for the base-end S20 model and goes up to $1,599.99 (Rs. 1,14,000) for the top-spec S20 Ultra 5G variant. In the US, the phones will go on sale from March 6 and pre-orders will start on February 21.
