Samsung developing curved battery for foldable phone: Reports
According to reports, Samsung is developing a curved battery for its much anticipated foldable smartphone called the Galaxy X. The company has apparently figured out a way to make such curved batteries with a capacity of 3,000mAh - 6,000mAh. Samsung should start producing the same in large numbers soon, along with a pilot manufacturing run of flexible OLED screens.
Samsung coming with foldable phone that can turn into tablet
The Samsung Galaxy X will reportedly have three screens instead of two. At the front, the phone will have two 3.5-inch screens, which when folded will offer a tablet-like gap-free viewing experience. At the back, the device will have another 3.5-inch screen. Users will be able to fold the device, to be launched in 2019, both inwards and outwards.
Will Samsung be able to beat rivals to the punch?
Samsung first unveiled its plans to create a foldable smartphone in 2011. At that time, the prototype could be opened and closed 100,000 times before the foldable display's brightness dropped by 6%. The upcoming device might cost about $1,900 at the official launch. Notably, big players like Huawei, Apple, Motorola, LG, and Microsoft are also working on similar flexible displays.
Not Samsung's first tryst with curved batteries
Interestingly, Samsung SDI, the Korean giant's storage battery manufacturing subsidiary, developed a curved battery four years ago. But that flexible cell design only had a capacity of 210mAh.
