Samsung may soon launch TV with no wires at all
From high-quality QLEDs to shape-shifting 'modular MicroLEDs', Samsung has done incredibly well with its line of televisions. The company is already experimenting with different TV technologies, and now, as part of the same effort, it has started exploring the idea to make them 'all-wireless'. Yes, you heard that right; TVs with no wires, not even the power cord. Here's all about Samsung's plan.
Wireless TVs: Is that possible?
If phones can go wireless then so can TVs, but they would need a much stronger source of power. This is exactly what Samsung is exploring, a new patent unearthed by Dutch blog LetsGoDigital has revealed. Basically, the company is looking at the idea of making a TV truly wireless by bundling it with a wireless power transceiver.
Samsung will place a 'power bar' behind TVs
For wireless power, Samsung has envisioned the idea of placing a 'power bar' behind the TV. It will feature a double coil wound in opposite directions to pick magnetic forces emitted by a base station and transmit it to the television. The process is similar to wireless phone charging, but here, you'll have a gap between the charger and the device being charged.
Even Qualcomm has a similar tech
As Forbes notes, even Qualcomm uses a very similar tech - called Halo - for charging a car through a pad that receives power from a transmitter on the ground.
Plus, this bar will have speakers
While acting as a source of power, the bar will also serve as a typical sound output device. The patent notes it will feature a pair of speakers on both sides, which, in our opinion, would further improve the utility of the whole bar and TV setup. However, it's still not clear how far the bar would have to be placed from the television.
Either way, Samsung is heading in the right direction
Though this is just a patent and there's no way to say if Samsung will actually develop a truly wireless TV, the fact that the company is exploring this idea shows its willingness to push the boundaries of modern-day TVs. If something like this really happens, the company will save you from the hassle of cables while adding simplicity to your living room.
