Reddit services restored after global downtime—Here's what caused the outage
What's the story
Reddit has resolved a widespread outage that left thousands of users unable to access the platform on Thursday.
The disruption, which lasted for several hours, affected both the website and the mobile app.
As per a Reddit spokesperson, the outage was due to a bug in a recent update, which has now been fixed.
Downdetector, which gathers outage reports from multiple sources, indicated over 33,000 incidents at the peak of the Reddit disruption.
User experience
App and website issues
Most of the reported issues (59%) were associated with problems connecting through the app.
Users trying to load Reddit saw a message saying: "Let's try that again. Sorry about that. There was an error loading content."
Meanwhile, 36% of the issues were related to problems on Reddit's website.
Some users who were able to access the site were greeted with messages like: "Server error. Try again later."
User reactions
Users expressed frustration on social media
The outage triggered widespread panic among users, many of whom took to other social media platforms to air their grievances.
One user on X asked: "Is Reddit down for everyone else or is it just me?"
Another from the Netherlands said: "Reddit down - 'internal server error.' Can't get to anything - profiles, posts, subs, nada."
However, some users took it lightly with one saying: "Reddit is down? Time to go outside and remember what sunlight feels like."
X outage
X also experienced a major outage on Thursday
In a related incident, social media site X also faced a major outage. Over 16,000 users reported issues accessing the app and website.
One user said: "Both Twitter [now X] and Reddit are down. Probably an attack."
Another added: "Twitter and Reddit go down at the same time. Something ain't right."
As of this writing, both X and Reddit were back online.
