AI-backed CCTV cameras on locomotives will curb rail accidents
The Indian Railways has announced plans to install artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled CCTV cameras on all locomotives and at major yards. This initiative is a response to the increasing number of rail accidents in India. The announcement was made by Jaya Verma Sinha, Chairperson and CEO of the Railway Board, during a press briefing at Prayagraj Railway Junction.
AI cameras to detect unusual situations
Sinha explained that the AI-enabled CCTV cameras are being installed to identify any unusual situations. "We are installing CCTV cameras with AI technology on every locomotive and at all significant yards," she stated. This move is part of a broader strategy aimed at enhancing rail safety across the country, particularly during large-scale events like the Kumbh Mela.
Railways to monitor tracks during Kumbh Mela
Sinha assured that security agencies would be on high alert to prevent any potential damage by antisocial elements during the Kumbh Mela. The Railways chief expressed confidence in the timely completion of infrastructure and capacity expansion projects ahead of the event, which is expected to attract more than 30 crore pilgrims.
Special trains and crowd management
Sinha revealed that around 900 special trains are planned to be in service for the main bathing event in Kumbh 2025, a significant increase from the approximately 530 special trains operated during the last Kumbh Mela in 2019. She also discussed detailed plans for managing the large crowd expected at this event, emphasizing preparedness for any potential emergencies.
Prayagraj Junction selected as Amrit Bharat station
The Prayagraj Junction has been chosen as an Amrit Bharat station, with one side of the building tipped to be ready before the Kumbh Mela. The entire station is slated to be finished within the next one to two years.
