Quora's Poe now lets AI chatbot developers charge per message
Quora's AI chatbot platform, Poe, has introduced an innovative revenue model that allows bot developers to charge users per message. This unique scheme enables developers to earn income each time a user interacts with their bot. The introduction of this payment model follows an October 2023 announcement where Poe unveiled a profit-sharing initiative that provides bot developers with a share of earnings from users subscribing to its premium service.
Poe is a one-stop platform for diverse AI chatbots
Launched in February 2023, Poe provides users with access to a wide array of AI chatbots from various developers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. The platform's primary objective is to offer consumers a streamlined way to explore new AI technologies in one destination while also providing Quora with potential new content. The diverse range of chatbots enhances the user experience and promotes the exploration of emerging AI technologies.
Revenue strategy to boost AI bot development
Quora's new revenue strategy is designed to motivate AI enthusiasts who create "prompt bots" and server bots compatible with Poe's AI. In late 2023, Quora announced plans for a profit-sharing scheme with bot developers and hinted at the possibility for developers to charge users on a per-message basis. Five months later, the feature is now fully operational, marking a significant milestone in Poe's growth strategy.

Quora CEO clarifies new payment model for Poe
Quora CEO, Adam D'Angelo, explained that Poe users will only see message points for each bot, which are the same points they have as either a free user or Poe subscriber. However, he stressed that creators will be paid in dollars. D'Angelo believes this "pricing mechanism is important for developers with substantial model inference or API costs."
New revenue model to stimulate innovative bot development
D'Angelo suggested that the new revenue model might encourage the creation of innovative types of bots in areas such as tutoring, knowledge assistance, analysis, storytelling, and image generation. Currently, this offering is only available to US-based bot developers but will be expanded globally in the future. This move is expected to foster a more diverse and innovative ecosystem of AI chatbot development on Poe's platform.
