Pixel 8 Pro's 10-month wait for Zoom Enhance feature ends
Google has finally released its AI-powered feature, Zoom Enhance, for the Pixel 8 Pro smartphone. The tech giant had initially showcased this innovative tool during the launch of the Pixel 8 series in October 2023. The feature was designed to use generative AI to reduce pixelation, and enhance details in zoomed-in and cropped images. However, despite promises of a future rollout with a Pixel Feature Drop, it took 10 months and three Pixel Drops for the facility to materialize.
Rollout begins post Pixel 9 series launch
The rollout of Zoom Enhance for the Pixel 8 Pro began following the launch of the Google Pixel 9 series. In a blog post detailing new camera features for the Pixel 9 series, Google confirmed that Zoom Enhance is "rolling out to the Pixel 8 Pro starting today." The feature will also be included in the upcoming Pixel 9 Pro series, including the 9 Pro XL model.
Functionality and limitations
Zoom Enhance operates primarily through Google Photos, which processes the feature in the cloud. This has led to questions about why it isn't being extended to the standard Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 models, as it doesn't seem linked to the telephoto sensor. The availability of this feature may vary depending on individual devices and their software versions. Once fully rolled out, users will find Zoom Enhance in the Tools tab of Google Photos editing suite.
Google's hardware chief explains Zoom Enhance's capabilities
Rick Osterloh, Google's hardware chief, had previously described the functionality of Zoom Enhance. He stated, "When you pinch in, Zoom Enhance can intelligently sharpen and enhance the details of your images, so you can get closer than ever, even when you forget to zoom." The feature works by filling in gaps between pixels and predicting fine details for superior post-capture zoom results.
