OPPO just tested 5G internet on a smartphone: Details here
Just as telecom gear makers continue to demonstrate 5G use-cases, OPPO has deployed the technology for accessing the internet. In a first, the Chinese giant tested 5G internet capabilities using a custom-made, pre-commercially available smartphone. The move, announced on October 27, marks a major step in 5G development and takes the company closer to introducing fully capable 5G phones. Here are the details.
How the test was conducted?
For the test, the team at OPPO connected the 5G network of their 5G communication protocol laboratory to a custom-made R15 smartphone. This pre-commercially available device was fully integrated with 5G components, including System board, RF, RFFE, and antenna. As a result, it successfully connected, showing '5G' logo on the upper right corner of the screen and allowed internet access.
When OPPO plans to launch 5G phones?
While announcing the success of the internet test (without revealing speeds), Brian Shen, OPPO's VP, said the company is committed towards the development and commercialization of 5G. He noted OPPO has laid the foundation to bring fully-capable 5G phones into the market as early as next year. Plus, the company is also striving to be the first brand to achieve that feat, he added.
Other players in the race
Apart from OPPO, its sister brand OnePlus, Samsung, Huawei, and Xiaomi are also in the race to become the first manufacturers to bring 5G-enabled phones into the market.
