#MWC2019: OPPO announces smartphones with 5G and 10x zooming capabilities
The Mobile World Congress 2019 is set to kick-off in a few hours, but OPPO, the sister brand of OnePlus, has already started the party in Barcelona. In a recent 'Innovation' event, the company announced handsets with 5G and 10x 'lossless' zooming capabilities. The phones will be hitting the shelves in the coming months, offering a whole new mobile experience. Here are the details.
OPPO's revolutionary camera system
Back in MWC 2017, OPPO unveiled the system of 5x zoom, but that tech never made into a commercial model. Now, two years on, the company has not just refined but also enhanced the concept, taking us to a whopping 10x optical zoom. This, as OPPO explains, is achieved with a revolutionary triple camera system hosting main, ultra-wide, and telephoto lenses.
How this camera system works
As per OPPO, the triple camera system works in perfect harmony to deliver high-quality shots with 10x zoom. The main 48MP camera captures regular shots with fine details, while the 8MP ultra-wide camera captures shots with a 120-degree field of view and 16mm focal length. Finally, the 12MP telephoto, setup like a periscope, delivers the spectacular 10x zoom with a focal length of 160mm.

You also get OIS, thin module
OPPO also offers optical image stabilization on the 48MP main and 12MP telephoto lens. This would come handy as unintended hand movement increases while zooming-in and that can shift the focus from the subject. Also, the entire camera module is just 6.76mm thick.
When the 10x zoom phone will launch?
At the press event, OPPO demoed the incredible zooming capabilities of its camera system on a prototype device. However, unlike last time, the company has confirmed that the tech would show up on a commercial device in the second quarter of this year. This means, soon we will get a good enough phone to take photos of animals, stage performers, or statue-tops from afar.
Notably, OPPO also announced a 5G phone for 2019
Along with the revolutionary photography phone, OPPO also announced its first 5G phone at the event. The company did not name the device but claimed it will use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 SoC and X50 modem to deliver next-generation speeds. It will be put on display during the trade show and will be hitting the shelves in Q2 2019, which is between April and June.
