OpenAI plans to integrate Sora video generator into ChatGPT
What's the story
OpenAI, the leading artificial intelligence (AI) research lab has announced plans to integrate Sora, its AI video generation tool, into the popular consumer chatbot app ChatGPT.
The announcement came during a recent office hours session on Discord.
As of now, Sora is only available through a dedicated web app launched by OpenAI in December that lets users generate cinematic clips of up to 20 seconds using the AI video model of the same name.
Expansion strategy
OpenAI's future plans for Sora
Rohan Sahai, OpenAI's product lead for Sora, disclosed the company's plans to broaden the reach and capabilities of Sora.
Initially aimed at creatives and video production studios, OpenAI is now looking to make its AI video creation tool more appealing.
Sahai confirmed that work is in progress to integrate Sora into ChatGPT, though he didn't give a specific timeline for the same.
User experience
Sora's integration into ChatGPT: What to expect
Sahai hinted that the version of Sora integrated into ChatGPT may not provide the same level of control as its web app, where users can edit and stitch footage together.
However, this move could lure more users to ChatGPT by allowing them to generate Sora videos directly from the chatbot.
It could also prompt users to choose premium subscription tiers of ChatGPT offering higher video generation limits.
Future developments
Vision for Sora and ChatGPT
Sahai explained that they decided to launch Sora as a separate web app to keep ChatGPT simple.
Since its launch, OpenAI has improved Sora's web experience by offering more ways to explore community-generated videos.
Sahai also expressed interest in developing a standalone mobile app for Sora and confirmed that they are actively recruiting mobile engineers for the same.
Technological advancements
OpenAI's plans to extend Sora's capabilities
OpenAI also plans to expand Sora's capabilities to image generation.
Sahai confirmed the rumors of a project involving an AI image generator powered by Sora.
While ChatGPT already supports image generation via OpenAI's DALL-E 3 model, a Sora-powered image generator could let users create more photorealistic images.
Sahai also revealed that OpenAI is working on a new version of Sora Turbo, the model powering the Sora web app.
