OpenAI's press account on X hacked to promote cryptocurrency scam
OpenAI's official press account on X, @OpenAINewsroom, was compromised yesterday evening. The breach was used to promote a cryptocurrency scam involving a token named "$OPENAI." The now-deleted post from the account, which boasts nearly 54,000 followers, announced the launch of this new token. It claimed that all OpenAI users were eligible to claim part of $OPENAI's initial supply and that holding $OPENAI would grant access to all future beta programs.
Scammers created a fake OpenAI website
The scammers went a step further by creating a fake version of OpenAI's website. The fraudulent post included a link to this spoofed site, which was not hosted on the official openai.com domain. The counterfeit website featured an option for users to claim the $OPENAI cryptocurrency. However, it required users to connect their wallet first, potentially exposing them to financial risk.
OpenAI and X remain silent on the issue
As of now, neither OpenAI nor X have responded to requests for comments regarding the incident. The @OpenAINewsroom account, which was launched earlier this month, has not posted any information explaining what might have transpired. This silence leaves followers in the dark about how such a security breach occurred and what steps are being taken to prevent future incidents.
