OpenAI's next AI model, GPT-4.5, might debut soon
What's the story
OpenAI appears to be on the cusp of launching a preview release of GPT-4.5, as suggested by a notification in the ChatGPT Android app.
Initially, this large language model (LLM) will be available only for Plus and Pro subscribers.
The notification hints GPT-4.5 could eventually replace GPT-4o in the free version of ChatGPT, with higher call limits.
Model revelation
GPT-4.5's 1st appearance and Pro user benefits
The first hint of GPT-4.5's existence came in late 2023 when ChatGPT appeared to mention this model name in a conversation.
The latest notification in the mobile app invites Pro users to try OpenAI's "newest and largest model."
The Pro subscription, which costs $200 per month, offers fewer restrictions than the $20 Plus subscription or free plan.
Enhancements
Ongoing improvements and new releases
Along with GPT-4.5, OpenAI is also focused on improving its web interface.
AI researcher Tibor Blaho discovered that features like Deep Research, Canvas, and image upload capabilities have been moved in a redesigned interface that makes model and function selection easier for users.
A new input option for Deep Research mode has been added, letting users add relevant sources, areas of interest, and files for detailed reports on them.
AI advancements
OpenAI's recent launch and market competition
OpenAI recently launched o3-mini, an AI model capable of reasoning while keeping token usage relatively low.
Though it is more affordable than the previous o1, it closely matches its performance in benchmarks.
However, OpenAI is up against tough competition from more affordable alternatives such as Google's Gemini Flash Thinking model and DeepSeek R1.
